Powerful article. In the science vs "whatever gets you through the night" discussion, wouldn't you agree that greed and self-interest make this an amazingly difficult problem? Our highly evolved lizard brains can justify anything in getting what they want. The extremes are the heads of tobacco corporations, AIG with their millions in bonuses after taxpayer bailouts, Blackwater with its private military, etc., all whom are of course convinced they are the good guys. Does the success-driven entrepreneur, as his bank balance quickly grows, really care whether his actions are scientifically OR religiously justifiable in the long run? Given our capacity to justify anything, and our increasing ability to really screw up the planet, we could use some fundamentally different ways of seeing things than are given by either mainstream science or religion. What would this different way of seeing things be like?
